Main Street America’s Spring 2026 Small Business Survey reveals a cautiously optimistic outlook for small businesses across the country, with many owners reporting improved confidence, stabilizing revenues, and signs of recovery after a difficult 2025.
The survey, which included more than 2,400 business owners nationwide, also highlights how different types of businesses are experiencing today’s economy in very different ways. Historic and legacy businesses continue to serve as important community anchors but are facing declining profits and succession challenges as many longtime owners approach retirement. Meanwhile, small-scale producers and makers are driving local economies through innovation and locally made products, though rising supply costs and zoning barriers remain significant obstacles.
The report also examined “thriving businesses” — newer, highly adaptive businesses that are seeing increased profits and growth. Many of these businesses are focused on customer experience, flexible business models, and diversified revenue streams.
The findings reinforce the important role small businesses play in strengthening local economies, creating gathering spaces, preserving community identity, and driving innovation in downtown districts like Columbia City.
