Columbia City and Whitley County are preparing for a once-in-a-generation celebration of the United States’ 250th birthday — the semiquincentennial. This summer’s events will highlight community pride and patriotism through public art, historic recognition, and multiple days of celebration.

Residents are encouraged to join in by decorating homes in red, white, and blue for a community-wide decorating contest beginning June 8. Veteran banners along State Road 9 and State Road 205, along with art canvases throughout the county, will also honor local heroes and the ideals of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Festivities continue July 2 with “Stars, Stripes, and Symphony” in downtown Columbia City, followed by the annual Independence Day celebration at Morsches Park on July 3 featuring food, music, family activities, and fireworks. On July 4, the community will open the historic 1976 time capsule at City Hall and begin preparations for a new capsule to be sealed for America’s 300th birthday in 2076.
