The recent Northeast Indiana Regional Tour brought Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) Executive Director Fred Glynn and Northeast Community Liaison Lindsey Hammond through a series of community conversations focused on economic development, housing, and regional collaboration.

For Columbia City, the visit carried particular meaning—highlighting the role of Columbia City Connect and local partners in using downtown revitalization as a catalyst for broader community development goals.

At its core, Columbia City Connect’s work is not only about activating downtown spaces, but about strengthening the long-term health of the entire community—through economic opportunity, civic engagement, and strong partnerships.

During the Columbia City stop, Glynn and Hammond met with Columbia City Connect Marketing Director Abby Carter, Executive Director Niki Keister, Columbia City Community Development Director Chip Hill, Columbia City Connect board member Kevin Jordan, and downtown property owner and grant administrator Lori Shipman to discuss ongoing efforts and future opportunities for downtown and community growth.

The conversation focused on how downtown programming and partnerships are helping drive outcomes beyond events and aesthetics. Initiatives such as First Fridays, small business support, entrepreneurial engagement, and volunteer coordination are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Columbia City’s local economy and quality of life.

These efforts demonstrate how downtown revitalization serves as a platform for wider community impact:

  • Supporting small business visibility and sustainability
  • Creating pathways for local entrepreneurship and youth engagement
  • Building volunteer networks that strengthen civic capacity
  • Enhancing downtown vitality as a driver of community pride and attraction

By connecting these efforts to broader goals—such as workforce retention, economic development, and long-term community identity—Columbia City continues to align local action with regional and state-level priorities.

The Columbia City conversation was one stop within a larger regional tour that also included Huntington, Wabash County, and Miami County. Across each community, discussions reinforced a shared theme: strong partnerships between local leaders, regional organizations, and state agencies are essential to sustaining growth and resilience across northeast Indiana.

For Columbia City Connect, participation in these conversations underscores a continued commitment to collaboration—ensuring that downtown revitalization remains not an isolated effort, but a central component of building a stronger, more connected community.
