Every thriving community has those people who quietly pour their energy, creativity and heart into making it better. Columbia City Connect is proud to celebrate two of our volunteers, Doug Clark and Mike Thomas, who were recently recognized by the Whitley County Community Foundation with Heart of Gold Awards. This honor is awarded to individuals whose service, compassion and commitment embody the very best of community spirit. Both Doug and Mike were nominated by our Executive Director, Niki Keister, not only for their invaluable contributions to Columbia City Connect but also for the many ways they give back to our broader community. Their stories remind us how much one person can shape the place we all call home.

Doug Clark: Turning Ideas Into Community Magic

If you’ve been downtown during a Columbia City event, chances are you’ve seen the fingerprints of Doug Clark’s imagination at work. Doug has a way of seeing what could be and then rallying people to make it happen.

In his time serving on our Board of Directors and First Fridays committee, Doug brought forward ideas that turned into community favorites, like the RC Drag Races and the Wheels of Whitley County series. But perhaps his most moving contribution came in 2025 with the very first Wheels of Whitley County Car Show. What started as an idea became a day filled with pride, gratitude, and connection. More than 120 cars lined downtown, proceeds went to Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana. Veterans were honored with a procession, prayer, National Anthem and heartfelt remarks. It was more than a car show– it was a celebration of service and community.

“Doug Clark is not only a volunteer, he is an innovator. He identifies opportunities to bring people together, creates experiences that celebrate our community, and inspires others to join in. Doug makes magic happen wherever he goes, and Whitley County is a stronger, more connected place because of him.”

Doug has also shared his talents in creative ways, writing scripts for the Digital Downtown History Tour and volunteering with Third Thursdays to help create events that were both welcoming and memorable. Wherever Doug lends his energy, he inspires others to join in. His innovative spirit and genuine care for people have left a lasting mark on Whitley County.

Mike Thomas: Filling the Streets With Music and Joy

For the past seven years, Mike Thomas has been the heart behind the music at Columbia City’s First Fridays, curating performances that have filled downtown with energy, joy and connection. His vision ensures diversity in every lineup– from honky tonk acoustic to Latin rock, neo-soul jazz fusion and classic ’70s hits– bringing together people of all ages to enjoy unforgettable nights of music.

Mike’s work doesn’t just book bands; it creates experiences. Families can be found dancing in the street, kids light up at the sight of performers and visitors leave with a sense of Columbia City’s vibrancy. Musicians themselves consistently praise the welcoming atmosphere he helps cultivate. This magic is no accident, it’s the result of Mike’s dedication and passion.

Beyond First Fridays, Mike has also invested deeply in local causes. He helped launch the Columbia City Skate Park, organized its Grand Opening with youth-centered activities and giveaways, and continues to advocate for the arts as part of the Columbia City Arts Commission. He also serves on the TROY Board of Directors, where he helps lead the Band Together Music Festival to raise scholarship funds for students at TROY School. Through it all, Mike has remained steadfast in his commitment to making Columbia City a place where everyone feels connected and inspired.

“His dedication, generosity and vision demonstrate the very spirit of the Heart of Gold Award: recognizing needs, creating opportunities and sharing his time and energy to enrich the lives of others.”

Why They Inspire Us

Doug and Mike’s stories are different, yet woven together by a common thread: a love for community and a willingness to invest their gifts in making it stronger. We are grateful for their partnership and inspired by the example they set for us all.
