Columbia City Connect was honored to be chosen as one of the recipients of NIPSCO’s annual Charity of Choice campaign — an employee driven volunteer initiative that empowers NIPSCO team members to give back to their communities through hands-on service projects. On Friday, September 19, a dedicated team of NIPSCO employees spent the day in downtown Columbia City, assisting local building owners with exterior maintenance tasks and helping to enhance the beauty and vitality of our historic downtown district.

Each year, NIPSCO employees select organizations across northern Indiana to support through their Charity of Choice program, volunteering their time and talents to make a tangible difference in their neighborhoods. Columbia City Connect was thrilled to be chosen for this year’s campaign and to connect NIPSCO volunteers with building owners in need of assistance for projects such as painting, landscaping, and general exterior upkeep.
Tackling Two Major Beautification Projects
The volunteer team took on two large projects that made a noticeable impact downtown. One of the biggest undertakings was the removal of overgrown brush along the side of the Pickle’s Café building. Volunteers cleared out large bushes, thick brush, and even a small tree — completely transforming the space. What was once cluttered and overgrown is now clean, open and beautifully refreshed.

The other project involved the alleyway between Olivia Hinen – State Farm and Bloom Gates, Shipman & Whiteleather LLP. Over the summer, this area had become filled with wildflowers and weeds. While the blooms added charm during the warmer months, it was time for a seasonal refresh. The volunteers carefully cleared out the overgrowth and left the alley spotless, creating a tidy and inviting space for the fall season.
“These were not quick or easy jobs,” said Abby Carter, Marketing Director at Columbia City Connect. “The NIPSCO volunteers arrived ready to work and tackled each task with energy, care and teamwork. Their efforts transformed these downtown spaces, and we’re so grateful for the time and dedication they shared with our community.”

Making a Difference Through Partnership
Columbia City Connect sincerely thanks NIPSCO and its incredible team of volunteers for their hard work and generosity. This event is a perfect example of how partnerships between local organizations and corporate volunteers can make a real difference — not only improving the appearance of downtown but also fostering community pride and connection.
We are proud to have been part of this year’s Charity of Choice program.
